In pharmaceutical manufacturing, when we work with strong or potent products, respiratory protection is very important.

During production, there is always a chance of exposure to airborne powder or fine particles. If proper controls and personal protective equipment (PPE) are not used correctly, these particles can enter the breathing zone and create health risks for the worker.

That is why respiratory protection is a key part of the containment and safety system in high containment manufacturing.

Only wearing a respirator is not enough. Correct use is also important.

Before starting work, the respirator must be checked carefully. The hood, breathing tube, filter, battery, and airflow should be checked according to the site Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). After use, cleaning, inspection, and proper storage are also necessary to keep the equipment safe and effective.

Another important part is gowning. Proper gowning and PPE use, following the procedure step by step, helps reduce exposure and cross contamination in controlled areas. Gowning is not just a routine - it is a critical barrier that protects both the product and the worker.

In my 12 years of pharmaceutical production, I have used different 3M powered air respirator systems:

  • For several years I used the 3M Jupiter system
  • For the last 6 years I have been using the 3M Versaflo TR-600 PAPR system with a white hood

From my own experience, the continuous airflow and system warning features are very helpful during long working hours. These features make a big difference in comfort and safety, especially when working with potent compounds for extended periods.

For me, the main lesson is simple. Respiratory protection is not only about wearing the equipment. Proper selection, correct use, regular checking, and following SOP are all important. Without these steps, even the best respirator cannot provide full protection.

Respiratory protection is part of a bigger safety culture in pharmaceutical manufacturing. It connects with GMP compliance, occupational health, and overall containment strategy. When workers follow procedures carefully, they protect themselves, their colleagues, and the quality of the medicine being produced.

For those who work in pharmaceutical manufacturing or high containment areas, I am curious to know - what respiratory protection system is used in your facility?
